The gala Indian
premier of the most debated film of recent times, Midnight’s Children, received
a grant opening that International Film Festival of Kerala and its delegates
have never witnessed before. The program was conducted at the portico of Anjali
Theater. The inaugural screening of the film was in the style of ‘Hollywood Red
Carpet Shows’.
Around 5.30 in
the evening, the film’s cast and crew, including director Deepa Mehta, producer
David Hamilton, Actors Rahul Boss and Rajat Kapoor, Minister Ganesh Kumar,
Chalachitra Academy Chairman Priyadharshan, Festival Artistic director Beena
Paul Venugopal set their foot on the red carpet. Later Veteran actor Madhu
arrived at the special function. All the celebrities had a photo session of the
media and public.
Before
screening, around 6, the inaugural function took place in front of the theater
lounge. Giving an auspicious start for the screening, lamp was lit by minister,
film director and other dignitaries. Then memento from the SL Theater group was
handed over to Deepa Mehta, by minister Ganesh Kumar. Next, film’s cast Rahul
Boss, read out the ‘forward’ of the new edition of the book, which is in-tie
with the movie. Before reading Boss, explained that, Deepa Mehta and the cast
decided to read this forward to make the audience understand the writer’s
effort behind the book. In his forward, Rushdie explains his inspiration for
the story of the book and how he developed the characters of the story,
Midnight’s Children.
Right after
this, the film had its first screening in the Indian soil. The theater was
house-packed for the film, which has only one screening in the festival.
Malayalam film directors like Lal Jose, Major Ravi, Viji Thampi, IG B. Sandhya and
many other dignitaries were present. The film will be released in Indian theaters
by February mid next year, through PVR Cinemas.
